Real bylines. Real experts. Real opinions.
Welcome.
We teach the work.
I started Grit Guide to be the resource I wished I had when I was coming up in this industry.
Leadership. Products. Sales. How to be known. The questions I had to figure out the hard way. There were no clear answers anywhere.
So this is what I built. The articles, episodes, and people I wished I could read, listen to, and learn from twenty years ago.
If you sell it, build it, run the yard, work the counter, spec the job, or are coming up in this business, read it like it was written for you. It was.

Nobody handed me a guide for this industry.Stefanie Couch · Founder, Grit Blueprint
So I’m building the one I wish I had.”
There is no guide for this industry. So we are writing one.
The leaders who figure it out fast will run the next decade. The ones who don’t will be run by it.
Six forces are reshaping this industry. All at once.
AI is rewriting everything
Your customers are already using AI to decide, buy, and specify. Your team should be using it to sell, hire, and operate. Most still aren’t. If your name, your products, and your story are not in the answer, you are not in the game.
Consolidation is deciding who survives
Quiet companies get rolled up. Sharp ones set the terms. The next five years will decide which dealers, distributors, and manufacturers still exist on their own in 2030.
Labor is the new bottleneck
The skilled trades workforce is shrinking faster than the industry can replace it. Builders and dealers who solve for labor will keep growing. The ones who do not will stall.
The pro makes the decisions
The pro is the buyer now. Manufacturers going direct to contractors are winning. Dealers that lose contractor loyalty lose everything.
The handoff is reshuffling who runs the industry
A massive generational transition is happening right now in family‑owned dealers, distributors, and manufacturers. The next decade of leaders is being decided this year, whether they are ready or not.
Brand is the only moat left
Everything else is being commoditized. Discovery, price, distribution, even product. The names buyers think of first will win the next decade. The ones still relying on being the best‑kept secret will not.
The Grit Guide Lineup.
Four ways the work reaches you. One newsletter brings it all together.

We publish articles, podcasts, videos, expert reporting, and field stories across ten lanes: brand and visibility, executive authority, AI and search, channel watch, sales and growth, products, tools and systems, leadership, the next generation, and spotlights on the people, products, and processes worth knowing about.

Built To Win, the weekly newsletter, lands every week. New articles, podcast episodes, and videos publish across the week.
The Blueprint and Pink Hat Takes ship when there is signal worth sending, not on a forced cadence. Spotlights, Behind The Build episodes, and Featured Expert pieces publish regularly as the work warrants.
Who writes for Grit Guide? +
Stefanie Couch leads the editorial. The Grit Blueprint team produces and edits every piece. Featured Experts from across the building industry contribute writing, video, and interviews under the same editorial standard.
Every piece carries a real byline. No anonymous fluff. No press releases dressed up as stories.
How is Grit Guide different from a trade publication? +
Trade media tells you what happened. Grit Guide tells you what to do about it. We are not a news outlet, not a press release factory, not a directory, and not a closed club.
We teach the work, tell the stories the industry does not tell about itself, and give the best people in this industry a place to be seen, learned from, and chosen.
What is a Featured Expert? +
A Featured Expert is a leader, operator, or specialist whose work and thinking shapes this industry. Featured Experts contribute writing, video, and interviews inside Grit Guide and are recognized as the go‑to voice in their lane.
Every Featured Expert gets two things.
An Expert Card. The public profile page that surfaces a Featured Expert across Grit Guide. It is the landing page that ranks for their name in search and AI tools, the reference asset they share across LinkedIn, email, and conference materials, and the trust page buyers, peers, and investors land on before doing business with them. Built to be used for the next five to ten years.
Every card carries one of eighteen industry badges that name what corner of the industry the expert operates in: Manufacturer, Distributor, Dealer / Lumberyard, Retail, Builder / Developer, Pro / Contractor, Architect, Designer, Engineer, Co‑op / Buying Group, Association / Trade Organization, Technology Provider, Partner / Service Provider, Private Equity / Investment Group, Consultant, Media, Educator, or Industry Futurist.
A Microsite. The deeper home inside Grit Guide for the most active Featured Experts. A Microsite collects their articles, episodes, talks, and case studies in one place, with the SEO and AI‑search authority of Grit Guide behind it. It is the expert’s own corner of the platform, designed to rank in search and surface inside AI answers when someone is researching their lane.
Why this matters. This industry does not tell its own stories well. Most experts rely on LinkedIn posts, podcasts they appear on as guests, and their own slow‑moving websites. None of those compound. An Expert Card and a Microsite on Grit Guide do. They become the page Google and AI return when someone searches your name, your category, or the problem you solve.
How do I become a Featured Expert? +
Featured Experts are nominated and reviewed against the same editorial standard as anything Stefanie publishes. The expert page is an authority page, not a listing.
If that sounds like you, or someone you know, start by subscribing to Built To Win and reaching out through the contact page.
